Director, Project Development Western US

The Director, Project Development for the Western US will lead the project development for community solar and distributed-generation projects in Colorado, New Mexico, and other western markets. This person will join an experienced team with existing projects in various stages of development and will work to expand US Solar’s position across several state markets. With experience in all facets of solar project development, including new market entry, site acquisition, permitting, interconnection, and project delivery, this role will have the unique opportunity to lead the business into the future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the business strategy for each of the western state markets
  • Manage both project development and team development
  • Understand local project requirements in all markets to provide guidance through the development process
  • Working with landowners to lease or purchase land, ultimately securing site control agreements
  • Coordinating with engineering for due diligence and project deliverables
  • Navigating the interconnection process with utilities, tracking all milestones, due date, fees, etc.
  • Securing land use permits and other pre-construction approvals from Local Government as needed
  • Collaborate with marketing, origination, operations, finance, legal, and executive management to communicate goals, status, and timelines
  • Evaluate M&A opportunities for the company
  • Preparing budget requests to obtain internal spend approvals for major expenses and campaigns

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Thorough understanding of DG solar markets, interconnection processes, and permitting processes
  • Excellent analytical skills with strong working knowledge of finance/business concepts
  • Self-motivated and driven to exceed expectations
  • Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organization
  • Completes work in a timely and professional manner
  • Effective working individually as well as with a team
  • Able to react quickly and problem-solve in quickly-changing environment
  • Experience working with both internal and external stakeholders


  • 5+ years of demonstrable solar project development experience that includes new market entry, site acquisition, permitting, interconnection, and project delivery
  • Proficiency with energy, solar policy, and western state markets
  • Strong analytical skills with knowledge of finance/business concepts
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of and passion for the solar marketplace, technology, and industry
